High potential and gifted education
At Tintinhull Public School we are proud to align our approach with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which recognises the diverse strengths and needs of gifted and high potential students.
Our objective is to create a supportive and enriching environment for high potential and gifted students that fosters their academic, social, and emotional development.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
The key components to ensuring this occurs are:
· Identification and Assessment:
· Implement a comprehensive identification process using multiple criteria (teacher observations, student portfolios, standardised testing) to recognise high potential and gifted students early in their academic journey.
· Differentiated Curriculum:
· Develop a differentiated curriculum that provides challenging and engaging learning experiences tailored to the diverse needs of gifted learners. This includes:
· compacting the curriculum to allow for acceleration in subjects where students demonstrate mastery.
· Integrating project-based learning and inquiry-based approaches that encourage creativity and critical thinking.
· Professional Development:
· Provide ongoing professional development for teachers on gifted education strategies, including differentiation techniques, social-emotional support, and advanced instructional practices.
· Enrichment Programs:
· Establish enrichment programs to expose students to advanced topics and experiences beyond the standard curriculum.
· Social and Emotional Support:
· Create support systems, including counselling and peer support groups, to address the unique social and emotional needs of gifted students, fostering resilience and self-advocacy skills.
· Parent and Community Engagement:
· Engage parents and the community through workshops and information sessions on supporting gifted education at home, enhancing collaboration between school and home.
· Evaluation and Feedback:
· Implement a system for regular evaluation of HPGE initiatives to assess effectiveness, gather feedback from students, parents, and educators, and make necessary adjustments to enhance the program.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
1. In the classroom
· Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
· Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
2. Across our school
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
· Students are involved in and foster strengths in public speaking and our podcasting group.
· Talent is celebrated through school musical, drama performances, visual arts show cases and dance.
· Leadership grows through SRC, Meals On Wheels, mentoring and peer coaching, and well being is made visible with our PROUD expectations, school mountain bike track, school fish and lizard enclosure and of course our therapy dog Arlo.
· Daily life invites curiosity and a sense of belonging with our environment through our gardening group, vegetable patch and our ‘Koala And Others’ program.
· Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, gymnastics program, coaching and differentiated PE programs.
3. Statewide
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
· Students participate in opportunities such as Premier’s Spelling Bee and the Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking. Our students also participate in statewide pssa sports for their region.
